History of Oak Flats The Indigenous tribe of Yuin was the original inhabitants in the area of Oak Flats. They had occupied the area since 15,000 BC. When this land was first granted to army officer John Horsely in 1821, the area was known as “Oak Flats Run”, and this is where the current name is derived from. It was heavily used to run cattle.
