History of Old Bar In 1818, Surveyor John Oxley arrived in place south of the Manning River delta on his way to the northern coastal areas and named it Farquhar Inlet. After the town of Taree was established in the 1850s, the place was named The Old Bar, located at the southern mouth of the Manning River. First, it was a park area reserved for public recreation. In 1903, ferry services in the Manning River began, and a land route to The Old Bar was opened. Residential settlements in Old Bar started after 1913 and were picked up after that. The coastal location provides an impetus for residential growth. Old Bar was once a centre of Australian aviation with many pioneers living at its airstrip, which became a key air passenger and airmail centre.
