Overview Orbost is a suburb in the Shire of East Gippsland, Victoria. It is located 375 kilometres from Melbourne and 235 kilometres away from Canberra. At the south of Orbost is the Princes Highway, where it crosses the Snowy River. As of the 2016 census, Orbost has 2,227 residents.
Living in Orbost Orbost describes itself as the “Heart of the Snowy River Country”. It is primarily a service centre, dominated by the beef, dairy, agricultural (mostly beans and maize), and timber industries.

History of Orbost In 1842, Peter Imlay and his brother established the Snowy River Station for grazing and a run in the nearby town of Newmerella. Three years after, the property was purchased by Normal McLeod, who named the land after Orbost farm in the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
An influx of people came around the mid-1850s after gold was discovered in the Bendoc area, which is north of Orbost. Around this time, there were 500 miners and squatters living in and around town.
