Overview Orford is a small village located on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, which is 73 kilometres in North East of Hobart. It is situated on the mouth of the Prosser River, on the southern border of an extensive coastal inlet known as Prosser Bay. Outside this Bay is Mercury passage water. In the census of 2006, Orford had a population of 553.

History of Orford Orford TAS suburb was founded and got its name in the year 1831. Edward Walpole gave their name to his 1000 acre grant, "strawberry hill," and saw that the town slowly became a magnificent port for the crook station on Maria Island. The short decks built for this are still there. In the 1800s, a small quarry opened, the stone was utilised to build Hobart and part of Melbourne on Mainland Australia. The historic Melbourne General Post office that was built using stones was from this area.
