History of Picnic Bay Picnic Bay is said to be the home of early European settlers. It used to be called the town of Camoomilli. The first known settler in the suburb is Harry Butler. Butler established his family live in the small place where they developed a mixed farm, an orchard, and a small dairy farm.

When Magnetic Island was declared a quarantine station, Butler and his family continued cultivating the land, and it eventually became a place where they cared for the sick. When the quarantine station was moved to the permanent palace at West Point, Butler’s family stayed in Picnic Bay.
