Overview Port Fairy is a fishing suburb in the southwestern region of Victoria. It is situated on the Princes Highway and is within the Shire of Moyne. This coastal town is about 290 kilometres away from the Melbourne central business district and is between the cities of Portland and Warrnambool. According to the 2016 census, Port Fairy has a population of 3,340.
Living in Port Fairy The primary industries of Port Fairy today are fishing and tourism. It is recognised as home to the largest fishing fleets in Victoria and was named one of the world’s most liveable cities with a population under 20,000 in 2012.

History of Port Fairy Before the European settlement, Port Fairy was inhabited by the Pyipkil gunditj clan. However, the Eastern Maar people are recognised as the traditional owners of the land where the town is situated.
Around the 19th century, whalers and seal hunters were already present in the area. It is believed that the town was named by the crew of sealing cutter “The Fairy” in 1828. By 1839, a whaling station and a store were already established in the town. It was also around this time when the swamps in the area were drained to be subdivided and leased.
