History of Port Fairy Before the European settlement, Port Fairy was inhabited by the Pyipkil gunditj clan. However, the Eastern Maar people are recognised as the traditional owners of the land where the town is situated.
Around the 19th century, whalers and seal hunters were already present in the area. It is believed that the town was named by the crew of sealing cutter “The Fairy” in 1828. By 1839, a whaling station and a store were already established in the town. It was also around this time when the swamps in the area were drained to be subdivided and leased.
