History of Ravenshoe The original owners of Ravenshoe are the Jirrbal Indigenous Australian people. The first settlers here were pastoralists who arrived in the land before 1881.
In 1897, John Moffat, a mining entrepreneur, purchased pastoral lands in the area. He established a village on his property and called it Cedar Creek. When the nearby town of Herberton was connected by railway to Cairns and Cedar Creek, Moffat’s property was renamed to its current name. It was said that a copy of Henry Kingsley’s novel “Ravenshoe” was found discarded nearby.
