The suburb is within the local government area of the Shire of Nillumbik and is neighboured by the suburbs of Diamond Creek, Kangaroo Ground, Eltham North, Eltham, and Warrandyte North. Based on the 2016 census, Research has a population of 2,649.

During Victoria’s gold rush, the suburb was called Swiper’s Gully and then was known as Research Gully after gold was found here when the area was re-searched. By the 19th century, the suburb’s name was abbreviated to Research.
