Overview Rhyll is a tiny fishing town on the northeast corner of Phillip Island in Victoria. The suburb is located around 140 kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district and eight kilometres from the island’s largest town, Cowes. Rhyll is within the local government of Bass Coast Shire and has a population of 568, based on the 2016 census.

History of Rhyll In 1798, George Bass was the first European to arrive in the area. He landed on the island to repair his ship. Also, in the same year, Bass returned with Capt. Matthew Flinders. A memorial was built for the said landing, which is located nearby the Rhyll pier.
By 1826, a temporary settlement, which was called “Flagstaff”, was established. A few decades after, a post office, which is also a general store, opened in the town.
