History of Rosslea Rosslea, like the rest of Townsville City, is situated in the traditional Aboriginal country. It derived its name from a combination of the word Ross, which meant the Ross River, and the word lea, an Old English word that means the grassy meadow. Back then, the suburb was made of all grass and was close to the river.
Hence, the name makes sense. Rosslea is the home of the oldest golf club in Queensland, the Townsville Golf Club. Established in 1893, the Townsville Golf Club was first built at Kissing Point in 1893 and was eventually moved to Rosslea in 1924, where it continues to stand up to this day.
