History of Russell Island Russell Island was first surveyed in 1839 and was named in honour of Lord John Russell. He was the Secretary of the State of the Colonies in the mid-19th century. The Europeans first settled in the area in 1866. In 1870, the land auctions commenced until farmers and oystermen began to settle in the area.
