Overview San Remo is a town in the Gippsland region in southern Victoria and is within the LGA of Bass Coast Shire. It is 122 kilometres southeast of Melbourne via the South Gippsland Highway. As of the 2016 census, San Remo has a population of 1,212.
Living in San Remo The coastal town of San Remo was initially established as a fishing village, but its leading economy now is tourism. It is known as a gateway to Phillip Island as it is located on the mainland end of the bridge heading into the island.
The amenities in the town are mainly located near Phillip Island Road, where there are local restaurants, cafes, a bank, a news agency and accommodations. Right across is the San Remo beach, where tourists can enjoy pelican feeding. At the southwest of the town are a caravan park and a few more beaches.

History of San Remo The original settlers in the land where San Remo is located are the Bunurong Aboriginal people.
It was in the 1820s when the Europeans first settled in the area. A few decades later, a township was established and named Sanremo, after the coastal city in Italy. The town was renamed San Remo in 1888.
