Overview Tamworth is a northeast New South Wales suburb famous for its annual Tamworth Country Music Festival and international acts. History of Tamworth The Kamilaroi people inhabited the area before European contact, and in 1831, the first sheep stations and cattle stations were formed. Also, the Australian Agricultural Company was granted a lease of 127,000 hectares in the same year. In the 1830s, a company town began to develop that is now called West Tamworth.
