Living in Tenterfield Tenterfield is a suburb located along the intersection of the New England and Bruxner Highways. It is the administrative seat of the local government area of Tenterfield Shire. At 850 metres above sea level, it is also one of the highest points in the Northern Tablelands. This rural suburb is considered as the “Birthplace of the Nation” because it is here where Henry Parkes delivered the speech that established the Australian Federation. Aside from being an iconic town in New South Wales, Tenterfield is a booming town known for its beef cattle breeding and wool production. It is also home to many natural landmarks, including the Doctor’s Nose (a nature reserve) and Mount Mackenzie.
History of Tenterfield The Jukembal people were the first inhabitants of the area of Tenterfield. By the 1840s, Sir Stuart Davidson took over this land and used it for sheep farming. The current name of this town was inspired by his family home in Scotland – Tenterfield House.
