Overview Thirroul is a seaside suburb of the city of Wollongong, Australia, and is located on the northern side between Austinmer and Bulli. The suburb is around 13 kilometres north of Wollongong and lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra escarpment section. In the 2016 population census, there were 6,083 people in the suburb.

History in Thirroul Wodi Wodi Aborigines inhabited Thirroul, and they occupied the area known then as Thurrural, which means ‘The Valley of the Cabbage Tree Palms’. The area was once full of cabbage tree palms, and early white settlers used them to make strong fence posts. In the late 1860s, early settlement began in the hilly area of the village. At that time, the main occupations were farming, whaling, cedar lodging, and fruit growing.
