Overview Thornton is a suburb located in the City of Maitland, New South Wales. Surrounding it are the suburbs of Chisholm, Beresfield, Metford, Ashtonfield, and Woodberry. According to the 2016 census, Thornton is home to 8,062 residents.

History of Thornton The traditional owners of the land where the City of Maitland is located are the Wonnarua people. The suburb was initially known as “Woodford” but was renamed in 1887 after the Thornton railway station.
