History of Timboon The town of Timboon was inhabited by people from the Girawurung Aboriginal language group. It is believed that the suburb derives its name from the local Aboriginal word 'timboun', which describes pieces of rock used to open mussels. In 1845, Europeans arrived in the area when Daniel Curdie followed the river that also bears his name to its mount at Peterborough. Callaways were the first settlers in the area, and they were English immigrants. Timber was the primary product of the suburb, which was also exported via the train in exchange for all the essentials a township would need. The railway line opened in 1892 but closed in 1986.
