Overview Tocumwal is a suburb in the southern Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It lies in the Berrigan Shire local government area. It is located 270 km north of the city of Melbourne on the banks of the Murray River. The suburb had a population of 2,682 people as surveyed during the 2016 census.

History of Tocumwal Tocumwal has a rich history, and like most of the other suburbs, it is said to be occupied by Aboriginal people. The area was inhabited by the Ulupna and Bangerang Aborigines. It is also believed to be named after a local Aboriginal word which means ‘deep hole in the river. In the 1840s, the first pastoral runs were established, while the town was established in the early 1860s and gazetted as a suburb called Tcomumwal. In 1868, Tocumwal Post Office opened, and it became a prominent custom point for goods crossing between New South Wales and the colonies of Victoria.
