History of Warburton Warburton was named after Charles Warburton Carr, the goldfields Police Magistrate for Castlemaine. The suburb was named during the 1860s by District Surveyor Clement Hodgkinson. It was made official in 1884, and after that, the surveyor Hodgkinson became Australia’s Father of Forestry. In 1884, the Post Office was opened, and there was a Victorian railway path called Warburton that connected Lilydale, but it was closed in 1965. The railway path is still in use for the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail. Pedestrians, horse-riders, and cyclists also use the trail.
