Overview Warilla is a coastal suburb located in the urban region of Wollongong. The suburb is among some of the most established areas in the region. North of Warilla is where Lake Illawarra can be found. In the south lies Barrack Heights and Barrack Point and Mount Warrigal in the west. This suburb is under the local government of the City of Shellharbour and has a population of 23,773, based on the national census held in 2016.
Living in Warilla Warilla has plenty of vintage-looking houses designed and built around the 1950s and 1960s. The suburb offers several employment opportunities because of its proximity to many industrial and commercial areas, such as Shellharbouse, Dapto’s industrial area, Wollongong, and Taren Point. The suburb also offers smooth transportation because of its several bus routes, large parking spaces, and minimal traffic congestions. History of Warilla Before the settlement of the Europeans, the Aboriginals took up the space now known as Warilla. During the 1950s, Warilla saw residential development, and in 1951, it was officially established as a township. The suburb was moved to land near the Shellharbour City Centre, and so, the city council of Shellharbour held council meetings in Warilla from 1969 to 1991. Today, the council chamber remains to stand and is still in use, with the commercial business now available inside.
