Overview Watson is a popular suburb in the North Canberra district of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The following suburbs neighbour it: Lyneham, Downer, Dickson, Kenny, Watson, Hackett, and Mount Majura. As of the 2016 census, the population of Mawson was 5,862.
Living in Watson Watson is a lively suburb with many television studios such as the famous Prime7 television studios, motels, schools and a local shopping centre. The suburb is surrounded by many natural reserves like The Mt Majura Nature Reserve, Canberra Nature Park, Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve and the Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve, which provide recreational opportunities to its residents and people visiting the suburb. Due to its prominent location, the roads leading up to Watson are usually congested with a lot of traffic.
History of Watson The suburb of Watson was named after John Christian Watson, the third Prime Minister of Australia and the streets were named after Australian judges and other legal professionals. It was gazetted as a town on 7 April 1960. The television station CTC-TV (now known as the Southern Cross Nine) was located in the suburb from 1974 until June 2020, when the Watson studios were demolished, and the station relocated to Fyshwick.
