Overview Wauchope is a suburb in New South Wales, Australia's Mid-North Coast area. It is located 19 kilometres (12 miles) west of Port Macquarie, along the Hastings River and the Oxley Highway. This suburb served as a significant influence in the dairy business in the Hastings Valley. Its population is around 7,500 people.
Living in Wauchope Wauchope is a regional service town popularly known as the "heart of Hastings." National parks and forest areas surround the area. It was formerly a significant timber settlement (the region is home to its most extensive blackbutt woodland). Moreover, the town's surrounding undulating grazing land has earned it a distinction as a major dairy and livestock centre. The 35-hectare Timbertown Pioneer Village, which honours the district's 19th-century timber beginnings, is the town's main draw for tourists.
History of Wauchope The Birpai tribes have inhabited this region for about 40,000 years. The town of Wauchope did not begin to exist until 1836. Captain Robert Andrew Wauch put down a deposit on 760 acres on King Creek during that year. He expanded his land holdings and constructed the Wauch House. In 1866, Robert Wauch and the titles to his holdings were issued in the Government Gazette, with the designation Wauchope. The town of Wauchope sprang up around this land, which he named Wauchope.
