It is part of the local government area of the City of Wodonga and is located 300 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. As of the 2016 census, the city population was 33,522, with its median age being 37 years old.

History of West Wodonga The city of Wodonga was called Wodonga in the late 1800s, then was renamed to Belvoir, and then back to Wodonga soon after. The Wodonga post office opened on 1 June 1856 but was known as Belvoir until 26 July 1869. It was often compared to the bordering town of Albury, as its economic growth was slower. It is said that the name “Wodonga” evolved from the Indigenous word “Wordonga”, which refers to an edible plant or a nut found in the lagoons.
