Overview Wonthaggi is a seaside town located within the Bass Coast Shire local government area in Victoria, Australia. This is the largest town in the region of South Gippsland. Wonthaggi is located 132 km southeast of Melbourne and is an area known for its beef and dairy industries and tourism.
Living in Wonthaggi Wonthaggi is a historic coal mining town that has recently been revamped to bring modern technology to facilitate the town’s economy. One of its most noticeable efforts was the development of the Wonthaggi Wind Farm in 2005. This eco-friendly wind power station generates up to 80% of the town’s power output and has become a tourist attraction in itself. Other tourism and recreational destinations in Wonthaggi are the State Coal Mine, ArtSpace, and the Bass Coast Rail Trail. Being a seaside town, Wonthaggi is also renowned for its coastal attractions, including Williamson’s Beach and the Bunurong Marine Park. There are schools and commercial centres in this town to provide for the basic needs of its residents.
History of Wonthaggi The name of this town is taken from an Aboriginal word that means “home”. They lived in the area before British settlement until the discovery of coal in 1826. Since then, the area was mined from 1859 to 1864. The town was officially established in 1910.
