History of Wynnum The name "Wynnum" was derived from a Durubalic word that meant "mud crab." The place initially had the Aboriginal tribes as its inhabitants for hundreds of years before European colonisation. Thomas Petrie, a traveller in the 1840s, described Wynnum as a large Aboriginal camp used to begin expeditions to hunt animals on nearby islands, such as sea turtles. Churches were also built in the town as a result of colonisation. In 1902, the Wynnum Shire Council was created, and shortly after, Wynnum became a municipality with its town council and right to elect a mayor.
