History of Yea Originally, the area was inhabited by the Taungurong people, and they used to call the Yea River Caluther and the Goulburn River Warring. In 1824, the Europeans of the Hume and Hovell expedition first visited the area. During the 1850s, most of the land was occupied by graziers, and in 1855, it grew as a service centre for grazing, timber-getting, and gold mining. The first European settlers were overlanders from New South Wales. They arrived in 1837, and by 1839, most of the usable land in the area was occupied. In the year 1856, one store opened, and in 1858, the Post Office opened. With such developments, the area evolved from a muddy creek to Yea.
