History of Yowie Bay Yowie Bay's name has an interesting background. The town was initially known as Ewey Bay, as evidenced by a map used by surveyor Robert Dixon in 1827. The name Yowie was first used when the land in the area was released, which was in 1889. Richard Hill said it meant 'Cooee,' a signal used by Aboriginal people to find one's location. Arguments about why 'Ewey' and 'Yowie' were used remain unsettled, but some believe it is the same, only that people with accents might have pronounced 'Ewe' as 'Yow', giving birth to the name 'Yowie'.
