History of Aitkenvale Named after Thomas Aitken, Aitkenvale was discovered in the 1800s, but it was only in 1867 that the land started being cultivated when Thomas Aitken arrived. Aitken took up 3500 acres on Ross Island. He put up a lot of the subdivided lot for sale. The lot that he did not sell and was placed overlooking the Ross River was named Aitkenvale.
Because of the great interest that he received in selling the lots, Aitkenvale had its first hotel open in 1884. With the stunning view and the probability of accommodation, Aitkenvale soon became a town frequently visited by many. The urbanisation of Aitkenvale began in 1949 when the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Palladium cinema were built.
