History of Altona The suburb is named after Altona, a city near Hamburg in Germany. The first permanent European settlement in the area dates back to 1842. Alfred Langhorne built a cottage there. German settler Frederick Taegtow, who came to the area and discovered coal there, named it after his hometown in 1861. The local economy flourished following coal mining until 1930. Altona got its post office in 1918.
Joseph Hammond did Australia's first cross-country flight from Altona to Geelong and also started the first passenger flight from the place in 1911. Altona expanded in the 1950s following a huge influx of European migrants.
