Overview An upmarket yet classic suburb with lots of differences from cramped urban centres, Annandale is less than 5 km from Sydney’s CBD. Administered by the Inner West Council, the historic suburb is admired for its culture and green coverage. Its northern border touches the Rozelle Bay close to the Sydney Harbour. Lilyfield, Leichhardt, Rozelle and Stanmore suburbs are next to the locality. There were 9,451 residents at the 2016 census.

Living in Annandale Annandale is a predominantly European suburb with perfect amenities for retirees, professionals and families. Next to the employment hub of Sydney CBD, the beautiful waterfront, tree-lined wide streets, and more green coverage add to its attraction. Leichhardt bordering to the west, offers plenty of dining and shopping options.

Free from the cramped urban feeling, Annandale boasts more public spaces, a wide-open thoroughfare, public parks, playgrounds, a range of quality shops and imposing heritage mansions. Music bands often perform at the Annandale Hotel and Trafalgar Studios. Bus connectivity and the light rail network make all parts of Sydney easily accessible.

History of Annandale The suburb became Annandale after a mansion of the same name in the area. Major George Johnston, the leader of the 1808 Rum Rebellion and among the significant figures on the First Fleet bringing convict settlers to Australia, owned 600 acres in the area in the early 1790s. He built an imposing mansion in 1799 and named it Annandale House after his Scottish birthplace Annan.

John Young, a businessman and architect, purchased the Annandale estate in 1877 and converted it into a beautiful residential hub. He led a three-year movement that culminated in making Annandale a separate municipality from Leichhardt in 1894. However, it was reversed in 1949. Annandale grew as a commercial hub in the 1920s and today stands as a planned suburb amid glittering urban sprawl in Sydney’s inner west.
