Overview Rozelle is a thriving New South Wales suburb just 4 km from Sydney’s CBD. It ranks among the 51 most liveable localities in Australia’s largest city. Once the southeastern part of Balmain, it borders Lilyfield and Rozelle Bay to the south. Darling Harbour is to the east of Rozelle, while the Paramatta River forms the eastern boundary. The reclaimed container port of Glebe Island is a part of the suburb. According to the 2016 census, Rozelle had 8726 residents.

History of Rozelle Rozelle is named after Rozelle Bay that shares the south and western boundaries of the suburb. The bay itself got its name from “Rose Hil” or “Roselle” parrots seen in abundance around the mouth of the Paramatta River.
Rozelle became a separate suburb in the early 1900s. It was initially a part of Balmain West. However, the area saw exponential growth in the late 1870s, and there was an increased demand for a separate office. This resulted in the setting up of the Balmain West post office in 1877. But this could not adequately serve the area, and another post office was planned near Weston Road and Darling Street. The second one was named Rozelle in 1892. Soon locals called the area by that name, and the suburb was formally named Rozelle in the early 1900s.
