History of Balmain Balmain was founded in 1836. Before the arrival of the Europeans, Balmain was primarily inhabited by Aboriginal Australians, Wangal, and Gadigal people. The locals used to hunt kangaroos that brought them to the shaggy peninsula to the east of Peacock Point.

The area known today as the suburb of Balmain was a portion of the 2.2 square kilometres grant given by Governor John Hunter to Dr William Balmain in 1800.

Balmain was where the unionist trade movement originated. Balmain has been embedded into the history of the working-class culture because it was in this suburb where the Australian Labour Party was established in 1891.
