Overview Located 5 kilometres west of the Sydney Central Business District, Birchgrove is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in New South Wales. It is located on the northwest slope of the Balmain Peninsula and overlooks Sydney Harbour. The long waterfront makes it a great place, and it offers views of the Parramatta River. Also, it is one of the wealthier suburbs of Sydney. As per the 2016 population census, there were 3,303 people in the suburb.

History of Birchgrove The suburb was named after Birchgrove house that was built by Lieutenant John Birch around 1812. Many orange trees were growing on the original site, and that’s why he added ‘grove’ to his surname. The estate was bought by Roland Warpole Loane, a merchant trader, in 1814. The Clifton Villa is the local heritage as it’s a three-story sand house in the Gothic style. Also, the suburb was the location of Australia’s deepest coal mine, Balmain Colliery. Today, Birchgrove is one of the wealthiest suburbs with many investors.
