History Applecross is a riverside suburb of Perth, Western Australia, bounded by Canning Highway and the Swan River. The name Applecross is thought to come from the Gaelic 'A' Chomraich', meaning "the Church of the Holy Cross".Applecross was originally established as a logging town with sawmills and timber yards in the 1870s. In the mid 1800s, a man by the name of John Scaddan set up a homestead in the area. He built a bakery and a school which acted as the first post office. In 1869, George Ross Smith arrived and established a bakery and general store. He also constructed the first sheep shearing shed, which was used to bring shearers from Western Australia's wheat belt to Applecross. In 1871, Smith built the first hotel which gave him an income from alcohol sales. In 1872, he became postmaster. The town was surveyed in 1883 with 300 lots offered for sale. The town grew quickly because of its location between Perth and Dundas. The town was one of the last in Western Australia to be serviced by rail, with the Western Australian Government Railways opening a line in 1898.Many of the original buildings still stand, including the original schoolhouse, which is now part of the Applecross Inn.Applecross is situated south-west of Perth on Cape Peron in Western Australia's Southwest National Park. The town owes its origins to logging.
