Avalon Beach had a population of 14670 people (2016 census). The suburb is 37 kilometres north of the central business district of Sydney; Avalon Beach is under the jurisdiction of the Northern Beaches Council.

The first grand in Avalon was a 240,000 square metre land given to John Farrell in 1827.

Significant housing developments rose in Avalon in the 1920s. Avalon Beach was named a suburb in 1921, initially as Avalon, then as Avalon Beach in 2012.
