History of Palm Beach Palm Beach was named after the Cabbage Tree palms (Livistona australis) found at the southern end of the suburb.
It was in 1788 when the first explorations began in the area, headed by Governor Philip. Most of the land (including Barrenjoey and Whale beach) was granted to James Napper. In 1881, the property was purchased by the government, was subdivided and offered for sale. Most residents during the suburb’s early years were Europeans and Chinese citizens whose livelihood was catching and drying fish.
