Overview Avenel is a small suburb in Victoria, Australia and lies in the Shire of Strathbogie local government area. According to the 2006 population census, 728 people were residing in the town.
Living in Avenel The small suburb of Avenel has something for everyone; it is home to organisations such as the Avenel Football Club, Avenel Tennis Club, Avenel Bowling Club, and the Avenel Cricket Club. The Goulburn Valley Horse Association has also been running the Avenel Horse Trials since 1967. The town has many beautiful places to visit, including the Old Sydney Road Bridge, the Grave of John Kelly, the Royal Mail Hotel, and the Harvest Home Boutique Hotel. Although the suburb was established as a stopover point from Melbourne to Albury, it became a popular residential spot. The suburb grew rapidly and has become an ideal location for families with kids, individuals, and retirees.
History of Avenel Avenel was established along the old Hume Highway. It is believed that the town was named for a village in Gloucestershire by Henry Kent Hughes. The name also appeared in Sir Walter Scott’s Tales from Benedictine Sources: The Monastery (1820) and The Abbot (1820). The name was given to a castle and family. In 1858, the Post Office opened and the development took speed. Avenel was also the hometown of Australian bushranger Ned Kelly when he was young. He was the most famous citizen of the town.
