History of Seymour Traditional owners and residents of the land that Seymour presently inhabits are the Taungurung (Daung Wurrung) people. It is the homeland of the Butera Balug clan, who lived in the area when Europeans first arrived in the early 1800s. It was formed in 1837 and proclaimed a town in 1841 and was named after Edward Adolphus Seymour, 12th Duke of Somerset and first Lord of the Admiralty.
