History of Bakers Creek The town was named after the creek in the area - Bakers Creek, which was then named in honour of John I. Baker, who became a customs officer of Mackay in 1863. The first school in the town opened in 1922, and a post office was established after five years.
A tragic event took place in the town in 1943, when a USAAF aircraft crashed in Bakers Street that took the lives of 40 people. The said incident is considered to be Australia's worst aviation disaster to date. A memorial of this event was erected in 1981 in the town's community hall.
