Overview Ooralea is a suburb located in the southern portion of the Mackay Region in the state of Queensland. The suburb is a little less than 6 square kilometres in size (in terms of land area). Its population is 3,366 based on the 2016 census. Ooralea is surrounded by neighbouring suburbs such as the Racecourse, West Mackay, Paget, Te Kowai, and Bakers Creek.
Living in Ooralea Even though Ooralea is categorized as a residential suburb, only a tiny portion of the entire community is used for residential development. A large part of the land is still dedicated to sugarcane farming. However, the Mackay Regional Council has revealed its plans to encourage more residential and suburban developments in the area. In 1992, a campus of Central Queensland University was opened in the suburb along with a housing development located close to the campus. It is home to the Mackay Turf Club that developed a racecourse for harness racing.
History of Ooralea The original name of this suburb is Planlands, which was named after the Planlands railway station (the former defunct Mackay railway line). This former railway station sits opposite the race track and is no longer existent today. Its current name was finalized and made official in 1999.
