History The first man to visit the area was James Cook. He sailed up the river and took a good look at the place, but he never set foot on it. Banks is a suburb in the Canberra, Australia district of Tuggeranong. It is the most southerly suburb of Canberra. The suburb is named after Sir Joseph Banks (1743–1820), the botanist who accompanied Captain James Cook to Botany Bay in 1770. The suburb was gazetted on 12 March 1987.The name of the town was officially changed from Bogan Gate to Banks in 1924.In 1937, the Australian Government approved a proposal for a large irrigation project in the region and by 1938, construction had begun on a dam and a power station.A decade later, the first water began flowing through pipes to farms and residents.In 1988, government departments moved into the new city centre building complex.In 1993, the population of Banks reached 5,000 people for the first time.
