Overview Banora Point is a town in the Northern Rivers region in the LGA of Tweed Shire. The suburbs surrounding Banora are Bilambil Heights, Tweed Heads South, Fingal Head, Terranora, and Chinderah.
Together, Banora Point, Tweed Heads South and Terranora had a population of 27,368 in 2001. By 2016, the town alone already had 16,167 residents.
Living in Banora Point The town is primarily suburban, although it has an emerging small business industry and shopping precincts. The majority of the town’s population are retirees and families.
There are numerous schools in Banora Point, including government-run schools and Catholic schools. In the middle of the town is the Banora Gold Club, and near it is the Banora Shopping Village that has a major supermarket, restaurants, florist and even a medical centre.
History of Banora Point The original inhabitants of the area where Banora Point is located are the Coodjingburra peoples group. It is said that Banora’s name was possibly derived from the Aboriginal term “banyar”, which means “good”.
It was in 1870 when the first land selection by the European settlers took place. By the year 1893, a public school in the town opened. The school was built on the banks of the Tweed River and was called “Kurrara”. In 1937, the school adopted the town’s name and was known as Banora Point Public School.
