History of Terranora The origin of Terranora name is not clear. Many claim it is a derivative of the Aboriginal word Taranora, which means higher grounds chosen for sugarcane cultivation. However, a few others think the name suggests a small water body or estuary. The Terranora Creek located to the north of the place attests to it. Terranora began as a campsite of timber cutters around 1823. Soon settlements began, and it was populated mostly by tree cutters. The area was an important centre for harvesting and exporting great red cedar trees that found their way to Europe. By 1910, it grew to have schools and hotels. The 1950s saw rapid development in the area under the aegis of the Tweed Shire council.
