History of Batemans Bay The town has a rich historical background as it lies on land traditionally occupied by the Walbunja people belonging to the Yuin nation. These people were the original custodians of Batemans Bay, and they used to speak the language Dhurga, one of the Yuin-Kuric languages. Even today, many sites in the suburb are considered culturally significant to the Walbunja people, including Hanging Rock and Bhundoo. As far as European history is concerned, an explorer named James Cook first sighted and named the bay. However, there isn’t any reason behind the town’s name given by Cook.
