History of Bathurst Bathurst is the oldest inland town in Australia. The land of Bathurst was initially inhabited by the Wiradjuri people, an Aboriginal tribe. The area was first colonized around the early 1820s when Governor Lachlan Macquarie removed the restrictions around colonial settlements. On 7 May 1815, Governor Macquarie raised the British flag at Cox’ Road in Bathurst, proclaiming the town of Bathurst. The town’s name was chosen in honour of Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst.
