History Bellambi is a suburb of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. It has a railway station (opened 1889) on the NSW TrainLink South Coast Line.Bellambi is situated directly north of Corrimal and east of Russell Vale. It has a beach, Bellambi Beach, on the Wollongong to Thirroul Bike Track.Bellambi lies on the flat northern Illawarra coastal plain, with views of the escarpment to the west, one of note being Broker's Nose, 440 metres high. Bellambi used to be a mining town until the mines were closed in the early 1960s. It has long stretches of beaches and is home to Bellambi Point, which offers some of the best views in the Illawarra region. The first inhabitants of Bellambi were the Cadigal people who migrated from the south and settled in the Eastern Suburbs. The area was originally inhabited by Aboriginal people and they called it Berrima, which means 'place of plenty'. The modern day name Bellambi is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'southernmost place'.In 1820, John Connell arrived in the area and started farming wheat. In 1825 he was granted a block of land in what is now known as Bellambi. His grandson became the manager of the property in 1925 and when he died in 1946, his son took over.
