History of Bondi Bondi is derived from an Aboriginal word ‘Boondi’ which signifies ‘Surf’ in English and ‘noise made by sea waves breaking on the beach. The first record of the beach was between 1899 and 1903 by European-Ancestry Australians. William Roberts received a grant of land in the area in 1809, and in 1851 Edward Smith Hall and Francis O’Brien bought most of the beach frontage. The beach was a working-class suburb throughout the twentieth century, and the multicultural migration brought significant growth to the area.
