History of Bondi The suburb of Bondi officially came into existence in 1851. However, the area was populated by Aboriginals for thousands of years. The area was named Bondi in 1827, following a misspelling of the indigenous word "boondi," which means water washing rocks. The first European settlement began in 1809, and its coastal location led Bondi to emerge as an urban hub after the 1840s. A large number of heritage buildings there exhibit both Victorian and Federation styles. Until 1882, the area was privately held. It grew as an iconic beach destination in the early 1900s. The 1950s and 60s witnessed the wealthy of Australia flocking into Bondi and buying real estate there, making it a sought-after suburb.
