Overview Tamarama is a beautiful beachside eastern suburb of Sydney in the state of New South Wales. It is located 6 kilometres east of the Sydney Central Business District and is primarily residential. It has a small beach of around 1 kilometre south of Bondi Beach and is popular for surfing, swimming, sunbathing, and picnics. As of the 2016 population census, there were 1,622 people in the suburb.

History of Tamarama European settlers first named the suburb Dixon Bay, and it was changed to Tamarama in the 1800s. It is believed that the present name comes from the Aboriginal name ‘Gamma Gamma’, which means ‘storm’. In 1887, the first coastal amusement park of Sydney opened at Tamarama, and it was named The Bondi Aquarium. It was such a sight to behold, but in 1891 a fire destroyed the aquarium and pavilion. The same year, it was constructed again and continued to entertain people in Sydney.
