History of Waverley Waverley is named after a home built near Old South Head Road in 1827 by Barnett Levey, Waverley House. He named the house after the title of his favourite book - Waverley. Some surrounding suburbs also took the name from the house as it was a popular landmark. In 1877, Waverley Cemetery was established, and it is one of the most notable cemeteries in Australia. It is situated on a cliff-side location and features the graves of several notable Australians. The suburb has many heritage-listed sites, including St Mary’s Anglican Church, Presbyterian Church, and Mary Immaculate Catholic Church.
